Through its Policy Institute, SSM Health Care works with local, state and national policy-makers, including legislators and executives, to improve the overall health delivery system in the United States including services provided at SSM facilities. The Institute identifies practices that foster exceptional health-care services at SSM entities and promotes their use in the health-care profession at-large. This effort is carried out by the Institute’s staff working with these policy-makers as well as through SSM membership and ties to various associations.

The Institute also develops positions on such health-care issues as universal health-care coverage; access to basic health care; management of end-of-life care; and support for medical research. The Institute has developed position papers on the "Principles of Care," "Pay for Performance,” "Coverage and the Uninsured," "Serious Reportable Events," Electronic Health Records (background brief) and "Community Benefit.”

The SSM Policy Institute has developed a position paper on health-care reform issues: Overall Position Statement on Health Care Reform.
